Successful revitalisation of the exposed concrete in the Museum by Tadao Ando

Germany

The stone sculpture museum designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando at the Kubach-Wilmsen Foundation in Bad Münster near Bad Kreuznach, Germany, was revitalised in various stages in 2024 using high-quality concrete cosmetics from MC-Bauchemie. The aim of the work was to renew the exposed concrete and preserve its aesthetic quality in the long term.

The museum, which opened in 2010, is the only contemporary stone sculpture museum in the world. Its architectural concept combines exposed concrete with a reconstructed half-timbered barn from the 18th century, which has a traditional slate roof. The combination of these materials makes the building a special architectural jewel that blends harmoniously into the picturesque wine landscape of the Nahe Valley. However, the exposed location and natural weather influences placed high demands on the durability of the surfaces.

Weathered concrete surfaces had to be revitalised

Over the years, the exposed concrete had visibly changed. The surfaces were unevenly worn and dirty and therefore required a comprehensive renovation to restore a homogeneous concrete look and preserve the minimalist and clear aesthetic language of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. In addition to the visual enhancement, it was essential to protect the surfaces from future weathering, moisture and frost to ensure the long-term durability and appearance of the building's concrete surfaces

The revitalisation should renew the exposed concrete and preserve its aesthetic quality in the long term.

MC’s concrete cosmetic gives exposed concrete a new shine

To overcome these challenges, the weathered concrete was carefully sand down and treated with MC's Emcefix F lang concrete cosmetic fine filler to restore and smooth the original surface structure. The highly resistant, frost/de-icing salt resistant and easy to apply R3 mortar Emcefix Floor was used for the surrounding wall crown in order to withstand the particularly severe weather conditions. The professional levelling was followed by a comprehensive concrete retouching with Repacryl, with which all concrete surfaces were completely spotted to achieve a uniform and harmonious exposed concrete look. Finally, the environmentally friendly Emcephob L water repellent was applied to all exterior surfaces to provide the concrete with long-term protection against harmful weather influences, while at the same time preserving its breathability and ensuring the aesthetic quality of the structure.

Thanks to the use of MC's concrete cosmetics, the museum can once again shine as an outstanding example of exposed concrete architecture. At the same time, the owners benefit from long-lasting protection against the harmful effects of the weather. MC's solutions have provided not only an aesthetic revitalisation, but also lasting protection and value retention for the unique architecture of the museum of the Foundation Kubach-Wilmsen.
