Sant Quirze del Vallès is a town in the hinterland of the Catalan metropolis of Barcelona in north-eastern Spain. There, Aigües del Ter Llobregat (ATL), a public utility company, operates two drinking water reservoirs, among other things. After years of intensive use, both were in need of comprehensive renovation. Above all, the permanent tightness of the two tanks had to be restored.

Advice and high-quality products create trust

MC has been working closely with ATL since 2014. As a public water supply company, ATL supplies the entire metropolitan region of Barcelona and the surrounding regions with drinking water and maintains the necessary infrastructure. Since then, several interesting projects have already been implemented with MC products. In addition, MC-Spain has also carried out some further training for the ATL engineers in recent years in order to bring them up to date with regard to injection procedures, concrete repair and surface protection, as well as with regard to changes in the European directives for materials in contact with drinking water.

 

The contractor was Sorigué S.A.U., based in Lleida, a company that has grown in Spain since its foundation in 1954 into a group with more than 20 subsidiaries and more than 4,500 employees in the fields of construction, municipal services and water supply and disposal. It was joined as a processor by Imrepol SL from Granollers, which has been involved in the application of mortars, coatings and injections for structural waterproofing since 1994 and, like ATL, has already been working with MC-Spain for years in the areas of drinking water, sewage and accessible sewers.

Expansion joints and crack sealing with MC-Injekt GL-95 TX

In December 2021, a team experienced in working with MC products began work on the two drinking water tanks. Ensuring tightness was the top priority. For the repair of expansion joints and cracks in both tanks, the MC experts suggested injections with MC-Injekt GL-95 TX, a swelling-elastic sealing hydrogel based on acrylate. It is allowed to be in permanent contact with water and complies with the KTW-BWGL guideline. In the end, about 2 km of expansion joints were injected with MC-Injekt GL-95 TX.

Triad for concrete repair

For the subsequent concrete repair, the corrosion protection for reinforcing steels Nafufill KMH, the bonding bridge Nafufill BC and for the repairs, levelling, coved trowels and surface protection the special coating for drinking water tanks MC-RIM PW 201 were used.

 

In the project, which was successfully completed in June 2022, the client, planner and executing company were able to benefit at all times from the know-how of MC's specialists from the field of drinking water expertise and to fall back on customised system solutions for the sustainable repair of drinking water reservoirs and drinking water pipes.
